    How to use it

    HEIC to 1080 × 1080 in 3 steps

    1. 1

Drop your HEIC photos above. Portrait and landscape both work.

    2. 2

Each photo is scaled and centre-cropped to exactly 1080 × 1080 pixels.

    3. 3

Download the squares, or save them to Photos on iPhone, and post.

The square that never goes out of style

Instagram made 1080 × 1080 famous, and it stuck. The square shows up all over the place:

    • Instagram feed posts and grid previews
    • Marketplace and shop thumbnails, where a grid of equal tiles looks professional
    • Profile pictures and podcast covers that are displayed square
    • Catalogue sheets and printed contact sheets

Your iPhone shoots 4:3 by default, so every photo needs trimming to become square.

Fill vs fit, in plain English

There are two ways to get a rectangle into a square box.

    • Fit shrinks the photo until all of it fits, then leaves empty bars at the sides or top and bottom. You keep the whole photo but get a letterbox.
    • Fill shrinks the photo until it covers the box, then trims what spills over. No bars, a little lost at the edges.

This page uses fill with a centre crop. That’s what social apps expect: a clean, edge-to-edge square.

    Your photo What gets trimmed
    Portrait (3:4) Top and bottom
    Landscape (4:3) Left and right
    Already square Nothing, just resized

When the centre isn’t the point

Centre-cropping is right for most photos, but not for a friend standing at the edge of the frame. For those, open Crop HEIC, pick the 1:1 preset, and drag the box onto your subject. Then bring the result back here to resize it to exactly 1080 px.

Fixing a photo that’s lying on its side? Do that first with Rotate HEIC, otherwise the crop happens on the wrong axis.

    Shop thumbnails in one batch

Drop a whole folder of product photos and you get a matching set of squares, all the same size, ready for a listing grid. Quality is set to 90, which keeps product detail sharp while files stay small. If your marketplace has a size cap, chain this with compress to 500 KB.

    Straight from your phone

On iPhone, choose photos from your library, let them process, then tap Save to put the squares back in Photos, ready for the Instagram app. It all happens in Safari, with nothing uploaded on the way.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered

What size is an Instagram square post?

1080 × 1080 pixels is the standard size for a square post. Upload at exactly that size and the app has less reason to resize or recompress your photo further.

Will my photo be stretched to make it square?

No. We scale the photo until it covers the square, then trim the edges that stick out. Proportions are never distorted.

Which part of the photo is kept?

The centre. For a portrait photo the top and bottom are trimmed; for a landscape photo, the sides. If your subject is off-centre, use Crop HEIC with the 1:1 preset to choose the framing yourself.

Can I make square images for a shop or marketplace?

Yes. Square thumbnails make a product grid look tidy. Drop all your product photos in and download them as one ZIP.

My photo is smaller than 1080 pixels. What happens?

Resizing can't add detail that isn't there. For the sharpest squares, start from a photo at least 1080 pixels on its short side, which every iPhone photo is.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos. It's much smaller and every social app accepts it. PNG makes sense only for graphics with text or flat colour.
