Someone with an iPhone sent you photos and your Android phone shrugs at them. Here's how to view HEIC on Android, and how to turn the files into JPGs when viewing isn't enough.

## The quick fix

Open this page in **Chrome** on your phone. Tap the viewer on this page, pick the HEIC files from your Downloads or Files, and they'll display right in the browser. If you need JPGs, use the [HEIC to JPG converter](https://ihateheic.com/heic-to-jpg) the same way and download the results. Nothing gets uploaded, and there's no app to install.

## Does your Android phone support HEIC?

Maybe. HEIC support on Android is real but uneven. Google added HEIF decoding to Android's system libraries some years ago, and many phones on **Android 10 or later** can display HEIC. But whether *your* phone can depends on:

- **The phone maker.** Samsung, Google Pixel and others each ship their own gallery app with its own format support.
- **The app.** A phone might open HEIC in its gallery but not in a third-party file manager, messaging app or photo editor.
- **The Android version.** Older versions are much less likely to cope.

The fastest way to find out is to try. Open the photo in your gallery app. If you see the picture, you're done. If you see an error, a grey box, or the file simply doesn't appear in your gallery, read on.

## Option 1: Google Photos

Google Photos opens HEIC files on most Android phones.

1. Install **Google Photos** from the Play Store if it isn't already on your phone.
2. Open your **Files** or **Downloads** app and find the HEIC photo.
3. Tap and hold it, then choose **Open with → Photos** (the wording varies by phone).
4. If the photo is in a folder Google Photos doesn't watch, open Google Photos, go to **Library → Photos on device** and enable the folder.

Google Photos may offer to back up the photo to your Google account. That's optional. Viewing works without it.

## Option 2: View in the browser

If you only need to see what's in the photos, the HEIC viewer on this page works in Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and Edge on Android.

1. Open this page in your browser.
2. Tap the drop zone and choose **Files** or **Browse**.
3. Select one or more HEIC files.
4. Swipe or tap through the images.

The decoding happens on your phone using WebAssembly, so the photos never leave it. The [HEIC metadata viewer](https://ihateheic.com/heic-metadata-viewer) can also show you when and where a photo was taken.

## Option 3: Convert HEIC to JPG in Chrome

Viewing is fine for a quick look, but if you want to post the photo, edit it, or send it on, you'll want JPGs.

1. Go to the [HEIC to JPG converter](https://ihateheic.com/heic-to-jpg) in Chrome.
2. Tap the drop zone and pick your HEIC files. You can select several at once.
3. Wait a moment. Phones convert one or two photos at a time to keep the browser stable.
4. Tap **Download** on each photo, or **Download all** for a ZIP.
5. Find the JPGs in your **Downloads** folder. Most gallery apps pick them up automatically.

A tip for after the first visit: the converter keeps working offline. You can add it to your home screen from Chrome's menu (**Add to Home screen** or **Install app**) so it behaves like an app without being one.

### If downloads end up as a ZIP

When you download many files at once you get a single ZIP. Open it in **Files by Google** or your phone's file manager and choose **Extract**. Then the JPGs show in your gallery like any other photos.

## Where HEIC files on Android come from

Knowing the source helps you avoid the problem next time.

| Source | Why it's HEIC | How to avoid it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| iPhone friend via email | Sent the originals | Ask them to attach from Photos, which usually converts |
| Shared cloud folder | Cloud keeps originals | Convert after download |
| Messaging apps | Usually converted to JPG already | Rarely an issue |
| USB transfer from an iPhone | iPhone set to Keep Originals | Set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic on the iPhone |
| Your own Android camera | High-efficiency mode enabled | Turn off HEIF in your camera settings |

### Your own camera might be making HEIC

Some Android phones have a camera option to save photos as HEIF/HEIC to save space. It's often under camera **Settings → Picture formats** or similar, labelled something like **High efficiency pictures**. If you're sending photos to people or websites that choke on HEIC, turning it off saves trouble later.

## Troubleshooting

### The HEIC appears as a broken or grey thumbnail

Your file manager probably lacks HEIC support, even if the gallery has it. Open the file with Google Photos, or convert it.

### Only part of the image shows, or it looks tiled

iPhone photos are stored as a grid of tiles. Some basic decoders only display one tile. Use Google Photos or the viewer on this page, both of which reassemble the full image.

### The browser converter is slow

Large photos take more work on a phone than a laptop. Close other tabs, convert in smaller batches, and keep the screen on while it works.

### The file won't open anywhere

It might be incomplete. Download it again, or ask the sender to resend. If you're still stuck, our guide to [why HEIC files won't open](https://ihateheic.com/why-cant-i-open-heic-files) covers more cases.

## Asking iPhone users to send JPGs

If one person keeps sending you HEIC files, there's a gentle fix on their end. They can change **Settings → Camera → Formats** to **Most Compatible**, or simply share photos through apps that convert automatically. ## FAQ

### Can Android phones open HEIC files?

Many can. Android added HEIF support in its system libraries, and many phones on Android 10 or later open HEIC in the gallery app. Support still depends on the phone maker and the app you use.

### Does Google Photos open HEIC on Android?

Generally yes. Google Photos displays HEIC files on most Android phones and in the browser. It's the most reliable free option if your gallery app won't open them.

### Why does my gallery app not show HEIC photos?

Some manufacturer gallery apps and file managers don't include HEIC support, especially on older phones or older Android versions. Try Google Photos, or convert the files to JPG.

### How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Android without an app?

Open this page in Chrome, tap the drop zone, choose your HEIC files and download the JPGs. The conversion runs in the browser, so nothing is uploaded and no app is installed.

### Can my Android phone save photos as HEIC?

Some can. Several phone makers offer a high-efficiency photo option in the camera settings. It saves space but creates the same compatibility issues as on iPhone.

### How do I ask an iPhone user to send JPGs instead?

They can share through apps that convert automatically, or set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible so the camera shoots JPG. Sending via email from Photos also usually produces JPGs.
