Turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPGs that open everywhere. Drop in one photo or a few hundred. Everything happens on your device, so nothing gets uploaded.

This tool runs entirely in the browser: photos are decoded and encoded on the visitor’s device and are never uploaded. It is free, needs no sign-up and works offline after the first visit.

## How to use it

1. Drop your HEIC files onto the box above, or tap **Choose files**. You can also pick a whole folder or paste photos.
2. Conversion starts right away on your device. Change the quality or metadata settings any time and hit **Apply**.
3. Download each JPG, or grab all of them as one ZIP. On iPhone, use **Save** to send them straight to Photos.

## Why convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC is a great format. It stores the same photo in about half the space of a JPG, supports 10-bit colour and keeps Live Photo data together. The problem is everything outside Apple's world. Windows needs a paid extension to open it, many websites reject it at upload, and plenty of apps simply show an error.

JPG is the opposite. It's older and less efficient, but it opens literally everywhere: every operating system, every browser, every photo printer, every email client and every upload form made since 1995. Converting HEIC to JPG is how you make an iPhone photo boringly compatible.

## What makes this converter different

Most "free HEIC converters" upload your photos to a server, convert them there, and hope you trust them with your camera roll. We don't do that, and we can't, because there is no upload step.

- **Private by design.** Decoding happens in a WebAssembly build of [libheif](https://github.com/strukturag/libheif) running in your browser. Your photos stay in memory on your device and are gone when you close the tab.
- **Fast.** Files convert in parallel across your CPU cores. A typical 12 MP iPhone photo takes well under a second on a laptop.
- **Accurate colour.** iPhone photos are captured in Display P3. We keep the colour profile, so your JPGs look like they did on your phone.
- **Metadata you control.** Keep the date and camera, drop the GPS location, or strip everything.
- **Works offline.** After your first visit the converter is cached. It even works in airplane mode.

## JPG quality settings explained

The quality slider controls how much detail the JPG encoder keeps:

| Quality | Good for | Typical 12 MP file |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 95–100 | Archiving, editing later | 4–7 MB |
| 85–90 | Everyday use (default 88) | 2–3.5 MB |
| 70–80 | Sharing, email, web | 1–2 MB |
| Below 70 | Tiny files, thumbnails | under 1 MB |

Need a specific size such as "under 1 MB" for a form? Use [Compress HEIC](https://ihateheic.com/compress-heic), which finds the best quality for the size you need automatically.

## Converting a whole photo library

Dropping a folder of hundreds of photos is fine. Each file is decoded, converted and released before the next one starts, so memory use stays flat. For big jobs, the [batch HEIC converter](https://ihateheic.com/batch-heic-converter) adds pause, retry and one-click presets for Windows, the web and email.

## Prefer to stop getting HEIC files at all?

You can tell your iPhone to shoot JPG instead. Go to **Settings → Camera → Formats** and pick **Most Compatible**. Our guide on [changing iPhone camera settings](https://ihateheic.com/iphone-camera-settings-heic-to-jpg) walks through it, along with the trade-offs.

## FAQ

### Is it safe to convert HEIC to JPG here?

Yes. Your photos never leave your device. The converter runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, so there's no upload and no server that could keep a copy. You can turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.

### Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, because JPG is a less efficient format, but at the default quality of 88 the difference is invisible to the eye. Move the slider to 95 or above for archival copies. The JPG will be larger than the HEIC either way, often 1.5 to 2 times, because HEIC compresses better.

### Can I convert multiple HEIC files to JPG at once?

Yes. Drop as many as you like, or select a whole folder on desktop. Files are processed in parallel using your device's CPU cores, and you can download everything as one ZIP.

### Will my photo's date, camera and location be kept?

Date and camera details are kept by default so your photos still sort correctly. GPS location is removed by default for privacy. You can keep it, or strip everything, in the Metadata settings.

### Why do my converted photos look the same colour as on my iPhone?

iPhones shoot in the wide Display P3 colour space. We embed that colour profile in the JPG so colours stay vivid on any modern screen. If an old app shows them dull, switch Colour to "sRGB" for maximum compatibility.

### Does this work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. On iPhone, pick photos from the Photos library or the Files app, then tap Save to put the JPGs back in Photos.

### Is there a file size or number limit?

There's no artificial limit. The practical limit is your device's memory. A modern laptop handles hundreds of 12 MP photos in one go; on phones we process one or two at a time so the browser stays stable.

### What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

Nothing. They are the same format. The three-letter .jpg extension comes from old Windows versions that only allowed three characters. Our JPGs use the .jpg extension, which every app recognises.
